By Benjamin Flowers: This week, Prime Minister John Briceño signed a $750,000 initial agreement with the Millennium Challenge Corporation, an agreement which Briceño says is a testament to the economic recovery work being done by his administration.
The initial agreement starts a process that can take up to six years, developing targeted interventions to address issues hindering the economy from growing, but Briceño says that what needs to be focused on now is the fact that the MCC chose Belize just a year after his administration took office.
“So we are one of two countries in the world that we were chosen and to me, it is almost like a vindication of the work we were doing. We had a previous government for 13 years and the MCC never looked at them and within one year we managed to convince them,” Briceño said.
He noted that to even get to the initial agreement signing stage, the MCC had to look at various things, including what was government’s economic recovery plan, how serious the administration is about fighting corruption, and how it was handling international situations like human trafficking; all things Briceño said his administration have prioritized.
“Now that we have signed the compact, now the hard work comes into place because now we have to narrow exactly what it is we have to do; the MCC along with the government,” Briceño added.
