Belize Brain Awareness Society observes Belize Brain Awareness Week

The Belize Brain Awareness Society is observing Brain Awareness Week from March 14 to 20, 2022.

On Saturday morning, the Belize Brain Awareness Society held a Brain Walk/Run in Belize City, which was very well attended, as part of Brain Awareness Week which is being observed from March 14 to 20, 2022.

The Belize Brain Awareness Society thanked St Catherine Academy for the support to the Brain Walk/Run and for “always being a champion to other schools about the importance of the brain”.

The Belize Brain Awareness Society also live-streamed a talk by Belizean neurologist Dr. John Sosa on the importance of the brain.

“The brain is the most important organ of the body,” said Dr. Sosa. “The brain controls everything. So, if your brain doesn’t work well, nothing else will work as it should. I think in Belize we take our brain for granted”

Dr Sosa said we go around with high levels of sugar and cholesterol. He said that we don’t give the importance to the health of our brain as we should until we start getting ‘bad’ headaches. We should pay more attention to it because we only have one brain, he said.

“We always, I believe, should do what we need to do: good eating, good nutrition, exercise, good sleep, good interpersonal relationships, less fights and quarrels, less stress on the brain,” Dr Sosa noted.

“And I believe this week this is what we could do, put attention to what is very important, the best organ of the body, the brain.”

Throughout the week, and in particular Friday as it was Brain Awareness Day, the Belize Brain Awareness Society, which lends support to people who suffer from brain diseases, has been having activities that promote brain awareness. They have been talking about aneurysms, cerebral palsy, hydrocephalus, epilepsy, the Ohtahara syndrome, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, strokes, depression, and so on.

They also had a brain activity or poster competition.

The Belize Brain Awareness Society has also been selling Brain shirts and ribbons to raise funds to help people who need CT scans and brain MRIs.
