By Hugh O’Brien: A swarm of Africanized bees, commonly referred to as ‘Killer bees’ due to their aggressive nature, caused a bit of chaos in downtown San Ignacio on a busy Saturday afternoon.
The swarm of bees lodged themselves on the roof of a residence directly opposite Venus Hotel near the Belize Bank on Burns Avenue.
An elderly man who normally repairs shoes on Burns Avenue was attacked and collapsed after he was severely stung by the bees. Police responded quickly the man was rushed to the San Ignacio hospital.
Some businesses in the immediate area had to close their stores temporarily and pedestrians were restricted from passing the area.
Quick response by employees of the San Ignacio town council, however, took control of the situation. The bees were sprayed and controlled within a reasonable time.
Business have since reopened on Burns Avenue and pedestrians can now walk on the ‘Burns’ unimpeded.
