Belize Bankers Association warns of Phishing – a fraudulent practice involving e-mail scammers

Belize Bankers Association Press Release (Contributed): In recent weeks a number of customers within the banking sector have been affected by “Phishing’. Phishing is a fraudulent practice of sending e-mails purporting to be from a reputable company in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information such as passwords.

The Bankers Association of Belize advises customer that Banks will not send e-mails or other communications requesting the disclosure of personal banking information. Therefore customers should not reply to any communication requesting personal banking information.

Customers’ personal banking information should remain private as this information can be utilized by others to perform unauthorized online banking transactions from their accounts. Consequently, customers should advise their Bank immediately if they believe their personal banking information has been compromised or unauthorized transactions have been performed on their account.

While Banks may provide assistance to remediate inconveniences causes, disclosure of a customer’s personal banking information that causes unauthorized transactions to be performed on their account is the responsibility of the customer.

Additionally, the Bankers Association strongly advises customers that they should avoid using their accounts to process transactions on behalf of third-parties.
