City businessman pulled gun and shot at would-be robbers

By Aaron Humes: Two men are in police custody and a third is injured after an alleged robbery attempt on the Philip Goldson Highway on Sunday night.

According to businessman Omar Avelar of Belize City, he was driving south when he got a flat tire. He had stopped on the side of the road to fix it and a pickup truck stopped in front of him and four men got out.

One of the men snatched his gold chains from his neck while another took his wheel spanner and hit him on the left side of his head.

Avelar told police that he feared for his life and responded by pulling his licensed nine-millimeter pistol and firing as many as eight times in the direction of the attackers.

Albert Crawford was hit in the left ankle, upper leg, buttocks, and elsewhere.

Police response led to the capture of two of the four assailants while the third escaped. They say they also recovered Avelar’s pistol and one of the chains.

Crawford was transported to the Northern Regional Hospital for treatment. Police investigations continue.
