Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wrap up tour in Belize with official address

Posted: Monday, March 21, 2022. 7:02 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers and Alexis Milan, San Ignacio: Their Royal Highnesses, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, wrapped up their tour of Belize with an official address at the Cahal Pech Archaeological Reserve before government officials, dignitaries and other special invited guests, ahead of their departure for Jamaica tomorrow.

Prince William greeted Prime Minister John Briceño and other ministers before making a speech to mark the occasion. He said his grandmother, Queen of Belize Elizabeth II, has often spoken fondly of her visits to Belize and added that he hopes to share the beauty of Belize with their children in the future.

He joked about the famed incident in which the Queen ate gibnut, a local delicacy, during one of her visits to the Jewel.

The Duke also spoke glowingly of Belize’s beauty and the country’s efforts to sustainably safeguard its bountiful resources.

During the reception ceremony, Their Royal Highnesses chatted with a number of official guests and diplomatic representatives in attendance.

The royal couple leaves tomorrow at 10:45 after completing the first leg of their tour to commemorate the Queen’s 75th Platinum Jubilee.
