Jamaican dancehall singer Shenseea sued for $10 million for alleged copyright infringement over “Lick”

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Popular Jamaican dancehall artist Shenseea and her record label, Interscope Records, have been sued for US$10 million for allegedly infringing copyright over the sexually loaded song “Lick”, according to UrbanIslandz.

Anastas “Pupa Nas-T” Hackett reportedly filed a lawsuit for copyright infringement in the United States Southern District of New York Court. Pupa Nas-T said Shenseea and her record label copied his song ‘Work’. According to the lawsuit, Hackett wrote, produced, and recorded ‘Work’ in 1999 with Denise Belfon. The song was a hit in the United States and Trinidad and recently regained popularity after a line from the song “put your back in it” was used in a Tik Tok challenge.

Pupa Nas-T claimed Shenseea did not get proper approval and licensing for using parts of his song. Shenseea reportedly said she had cleared the song and said she would not risk being sued and that she had a broad back.

Shenseea included the popular line of ‘Work’, “If a man want fi test you” and the chorus “Put your back in it” in her song ‘Lick’ which is one of the tracks in her debut album Alpha.
