Tyrone and Ellis Meighan held after being deported from Mexico; accused of breaching bail conditions in gang activity case

Posted: Monday, March 21, 2022. 5:29 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Tonight, brothers Tyrone and Ellis Meighan, originally from Banak Street, Belize City, are being held in custody at the Racoon Street Police Station.

They were brought back to Belize from Quintana Roo, Mexico, on Friday as the courts weigh their further detention for alleged breach of bail conditions in an ongoing court case. The brothers, along with younger brother Shaquille, are accused of being members of a criminal gang.

Crown prosecutor Assistant Superintendent Dervin Sambula applied under Section 40 (3) of the Summary Jurisdiction Act to Senior Magistrate Tricia Pitts-Anderson for an order of further detention until the Supreme Court can intervene in their case.

However, defense counsel Norman Rodriguez, substituting for a colleague, persuaded the court that the defendant had not been officially served with the evidence intended to be presented in court today.

The appearance today is on the strength of a bench warrant by a Magistrate for not appearing in court for their ongoing court case. An officer attached to the Gang Intelligence, Investigation, and Interdiction Unit told the court that after inspecting certain documents he was given on Friday, he was able to intercept Tyrone and Ellis, who were being held for illegal entry, and bring them back to Belize.

Attorney Rodriguez objected to what he referred to as an “ambush” by the prosecution and the Senior Magistrate held the matter over until 10 a.m. Tuesday and ordered the Meighan brothers be held at Racoon Street Police Station.

Essentially, by their travel, the Meighan brothers put at risk their ability to appear for trial on the strength of bail offered by the Supreme Court, as the group were last seen in Belize on March 9 and had not signed in with the police until they were brought back on March 18.

Shaquille Meighan is believed to still be at large. Two other persons were also brought to Belize on charges of illegal entry to Mexico.
