National Champions Verdes beat Garden City 2-1 on Saturday at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen and are not one game shy of winning the FFB Top League 2021-2022 Closing Championship.
Verdes opened the night in the 17th minute. Krisean Lopez cut from the right to the middle, crossing the ball to Mexican Juan Carlos López on the left side of the box. The striker floated the ball to the far post where Norman Anderson zeroed in on the pill ahead of goalkeeper Orlando Galdamez to head it into the net.
Garden City drew even in the 31st on a bullet by Sean Young. The Garden City striker stole the ball from a Verdes defender outside the box, served it forward to Brazilian Aloisio Texeira. The ball was cleared by Anderson. Young got it back on the rebound and punished goalkeeper Woodrow West with a left-foot floater to the left post.
Verdes wasted no time scoring the game-winner in the 36th. Again, Krisean Lopez ran into the penalty box on the right side, cut to the middle all the way into the goal area where he switched to Juan Carlos López inside the lion’s den. López just had to tap the ball to send it in beyond Galdamez’s reach.
2-1 – Verdes had the game in the bag.
Alone at the top with 21 and seven ahead of the San Pedro Pirates, Verdes only need one more win to crown themselves the Closing Championship winners. But they’ll have to wait two weeks as this coming weekend the FFB Top League takes a pause for the international break during which the Belize Men’s National Team should be active.
