By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Cycling Federation of Belize is inviting cyclists to participate in Queen’s Baton Relay on Tuesday afternoon in Belize City.

The Queen’s Baton Relay announces the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games which will be held from July 28 to August 8.

The CFB asked cyclists to come out to the corner of Mapp and North Front Streets in Belize City and ride in their team jersey today at 1:00 pm.

“Cyclists will line up in front of Tavern on Mapp Street. We depart 1:30 down North Front Street – over Swing Bridge – down Albert Street to the House of Culture. Cyclists will hand over the Baton to runners,” said CFB president Orson Butler.

According to the Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (BOCGA), the runners will then head to Brodies Hardware on Regent Street where they will hand the Baton to children from the Inspiration Center. These children will then proceed to Battlefield Park where they will hand over the Baton to Belize City Deputy Mayor Alan Pollard who will welcome the Queen’s Baton into Belize City.

“The Queen’s Baton Relay started its great journey from Buckingham Palace in early October of 2021,” said the Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (BOCGA) in a press release.

“The Baton has visited parts of Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania and its first stop in the Americas is Belize from March 22nd to 24th. Arriving from Australia, Belize is the 45th country out of 72 that the Baton will visit.”

On October 2, 2021, Queen Elizabeth placed a message to the Commonwealth into the Baton which is on a 294-day relay to the 72 nations and territories of the Commonwealth.

“With Birmingham 2022 making history by being the first major multi-sport event to award more medals to women than men, the strength and fortitude of women across the Commonwealth is celebrated throughout the design of the Baton,” said the Birmingham 2022 Games website.

From Belize City, the Queen’s Baton will be relayed to different parts of the country.

On Wednesday, March 23, the Baton will be taken to the Great Blue Hole, Half Moon Caye, and the Hol Chan Marine Reserve.

On the last day of the relay, Thursday, March 24, at 6:00 am, Belize Canoe Association paddlers will take the Queen’s Baton down the Macal River from the Hawkesworth Bridge to the Wooden Bridge where participants will engage in a riverside cleanup between the two bridges.

At 10:00, the Queen’s Baton will be relayed to the Xunantunich Mayan Archeological Reserve next to San Jose Succotz where Governor-General Froyla Tzalam will welcome primary school children from San Jose Succotz and Benque Viejo Del Carmen. An exhibition Pok Ta Tok game will follow.

The Queen’s Baton is spending two to four days in every country and territory. By the time it reaches Birmingham for the Opening Ceremony on July 28 it will have travelled approximately 90,000 miles and 7,500 Batonbearers will have relayed it.

From Belize, the Baton will go to Guyana and then head to the rest of the Caribbean, including The Bahamas, Jamaica, and Barbados, and reaching the islands of St Kitts and Nevis, St Vincent and the Grenadines. After two months in the region, it goes to Canada.
