By Rubén Morales Iglesias:

The Ministry of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour, and Local Government joined other government ministries and organizations in observing World Water Day (WWD) 2022.

“Rural Community Development Officers (RCDOs) Mr. Nemencio Acosta and Ms. Dominga Shack, as well as the Ministry of Rural Transformation’s Public Relations Officer, Ms. Ginéé Neal, are participating in the World Water Day Booth Display 2022 at Battlefield Park in Belize City today,” said the Ministry of Rural Transformation in a social media post.

The Ministry said it has joined educating Belizeans about its mandate to supply the rural areas with potable water. This objective, said the Ministry, is in line with this year’s theme: “Groundwater – Making The Invisible Visible.”

The Rural Community Development Officers Acosta and Shack are also representatives of the World Water Day Committee, said the Ministry of Rural Transformation.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW), which is also observing WWD said seventy-five percent of Belize’s active rural water systems get their supply from groundwater.

“The National Drinking Monitoring Program monitors 110 active Rural Water Systems of which more than 75% of these rely on groundwater,” said the MOHW.

“Together with these systems the Ministry of Health also monitors private wells and the increasingly wide spread of Bottled Water Companies which also rely on groundwater aquifers.”
