By Aaron Humes: Police are investigating a reported drowning of a minor girl, seven, in the Mopan River on Monday afternoon.
According to police, the guardian of seven-year-old Lucianny Thompson of San Ignacio, Mary Arnold, a retired Canadian residing in the community of Carmelita Gardens on the Santa Familia Road, said she had taken the girl to bathe in the Mopan River.
Lucianny was playing with a yellow rubber duck that had floated away and she went after it, however, she was struggling in the two-foot-deep water. Mary Arnold said she tried to help her but the water proved too much for her as well as she fell several times.
Ultimately Mary Arnold was able to get out of the river and seek help. The girl was found by a male teenager who got her out and tried cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on her to no avail.
Arnold informed the child’s mother of what happened and police were also called. Lucianny was formally pronounced dead at hospital and police investigations continue.
