Today is World Water Day 2022; BWS says groundwater is critically important

Posted: Tuesday, March 22, 2022. 2:03 pm CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: As the world observes World Water Day, today, March 22, Belize Water Services Limited (BWS) says groundwater is critically important and we need to work together to manage it.

As the word clearly describes, groundwater is water that is found underground in geological formations of rocks, sands, and gravels called aquifers.

“Groundwater is critically important to the healthy functioning of ecosystems, such as wetlands. In deltas and coastal areas, groundwater also ensures the stability of the ground and prevents seawater intrusion under the land,” said BWS in a social media post.

The United Nations started observing World Water Day on March 22 annually in 1993, to celebrate water and raise awareness of the two billion people who do not have access to safe water.

As the United Nations and world water management organizations promote the proper management of water so that we don’t end up without freshwater, worldwaterday.org is emphasizing the importance of the ‘invisible’ water.

“Groundwater is invisible, but its impact is visible everywhere. Out of sight, under our feet, groundwater is a hidden treasure that enriches our lives. In the driest parts of the world, it may be the only water people have,” said worldwaterday.org.

According to worldwaterday.org, practically all the liquid fresh water in the world is groundwater. BWS said that with the negative progression of climate change, groundwater will become more and more critical.

“Groundwater may be out of sight, but it must not be out of mind,” said BWS.

“We need to work together to sustainably manage this precious resource,” noted worldwaterday.org.

The water management organization said pollution affects groundwater to the extent that it can take decades or even centuries to recover from it, so we need to protect groundwater from pollution.

“Groundwater’s vital role in water and sanitation systems, agriculture, industry, ecosystems and climate change adaptation must be reflected in sustainable development policymaking,” noted worldwaterday.org.
