Belize celebrates World World Meteorological Day 2022

By Benjamin Flowers: Today, Belize joins with the rest of the world in celebrating World Meteorological Day 2022, an annual event used to commemorate the coming into force of the convention that established the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in 1950.

The theme marking this year’s observance of World Meteorological Day is “Early Warning and Early Action”, which emphasizes the fact that regular weather forecasts are no longer sufficient to keep communities informed in the face of rapidly changing and more hazardous weather conditions due to climate change. The theme is used to underscore the importance of impact-based weather forecasting, so communities can know what effects the weather can have, and the life-saving potential that comes with strengthening early warning systems.

The Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change, and Disaster Risk Management issued a statement, noting that The National Meteorological Service of Belize is the body locally that provides this vital information to communities as well as works with authorities such as the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) in response to weather-related disasters.

“The team at the National Meteorological Service of Belize (NMS) is acutely aware that a potential weather or climate hazard does not necessarily have to result in a disaster if the vulnerable population is informed in a timely manner through early warnings and risk information,” the Ministry said.

The Ministry went on to say that the NMS is committed to continuing to provide vital information needed by the public and working with all its partners in the national response to save lives, protect property and contribute to Belize’s sustainable development.
