By BBN Staff: Belize City resident 37-year-old Leon Garcia walked free from a charge of murder in relation to the shooting death of 31-year-old Ian Westby.
Garcia, who was one of two people charged in relation to that murder, appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court yesterday to learn that a directive had been given from the Director of Public Prosecutions on March 14, to have the charge against him withdrawn at his next court appearance. No reason was given for the withdrawal.
With the directive, Garcia was free to go after less than five months on remand, meanwhile, the first defendant, 26-year-old, Akeem Augustine, remains on remand with the charge against him still pending.
Notably, police arrested and charged Garcia not long after Augustine’s arrest.
Ian Westby was shot dead at a car wash located at the corner of Peter Secco Street and Central American Boulevard, Belize City in October of 2021.
Westby’s uncle found him unresponsive, sitting in his vehicle with a gunshot wound to the chest.
