42-year-old scammer pleaded guilty – claimed he needed money to bury his dead wife

Posted: Thursday, March 24, 2022. 7:28 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: A Belize City man who obtained money from a business owner under the guise that he needed help to cover the expenses of burying his dead wife, turned out to be a scammer.

Manuel Yacab, 42, told the owner of CY’s Music Store that his wife had been hospitalized for three days due to illness but died after. After he obtained a monetary contribution he walked out of the store into a police foot patrol, and one of the officers recognized him from a previous incident and began interrogating him.

He told police that he just wanted something to eat and when the officers checked with the store owner, they realized what he had done.

Yacab was charged with “fraudulently obtaining charitable contribution” and arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court this morning where he immediately pleaded guilty to the charge.

Given his remorse and early guilty plea, the Magistrate fined him $200 plus $5 cost of court, which he needs to pay by May 31, or in default spend two months in jail.

Police recognized Yacab from a 2009 case where he was convicted of obtaining services by deception.
