Breaking: Budget Debate suspended as tension gets heated in afternoon session

Posted: Thursday, March 24, 2022. 1:54 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes, Belmopan: Speaker of the House of Representatives Valerie Woods has had to briefly halt today’s Budget Debate after sparring between multiple members of the House of Representatives.

During his presentation, Fort George area representative Henry Charles Usher made multiple references in the absence of Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow to his travels abroad, prompting Barrow to raise a point of order to confine remarks to the substance of the Debate.

In the back-and-forth which followed as Deputy Speaker Marconi Leal handed over to the Speaker, Barrow was heard, in response to Usher’s call for him to help find ex-Minister Rene Montero, to call for his father and former Prime Minister Said Musa to return the monies the UDP have long alleged were diverted after being acquired from Venezuela, and shortly thereafter to point across the aisle saying words to the effect of “you are the biggest thief.” It was not clear whom if anyone he was referring to.

Of course, this is not the first time Budget Debates have gotten heated but the Government has been making hay of the forthcoming leadership contest between Barrow and Tracey Taegar-Panton who is also in attendance.

We continue to await the Speaker’s final word.
