By BBN Staff: A woman who paid $500 in advance to rent a house in Belize City was shocked to find the homeowner living there when she tried to move in.

The woman told police she had been speaking to someone with the name Michael on Facebook about renting a house on Vernon Street, and met up with Michael to pay the $500 deposit.

He told her she could move in the following day and while she was attempting to do so, she Met Mark Humes, who explained he did not know the person she was talking about and that his home was not up for rent.

The incident occurred in October 2019 and she had been unable to reach the person via Facebook or any other means since, so she took the matter to the police.

Police investigation led them to the culprit, Taedron Rohan Castillo, who was charged for obtaining property by deception.

Castillio was arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today, March 24, 2022, where he pleaded guilty to the charge and threw himself at the mercy of the court. The Magistrate took his early plea into account and fined him $1,000 plus $5 cost of court which he needs to pay by May 31 or he will spend six months in jail for default. Additionally, he has to repay the $500 he stole from the woman by depositing it to the court by May 31.
