By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Men’s National Team (BMNT) fell at home at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan on Thursday evening beaten 2-1 by CSD Melchor in a friendly prior to Sunday’s official international friendly against Cuba.
Not a good result considering the Club Social Deportivo Melchor from Melchor de Mencos, Guatemala, is a second division team. In Guatemalan football, the second division is a third-level league under the professional League, which they call the Major League, and the first division.
The BMNT took the lead in the 53rd minute off a header by Deon McCaulay.
Melchor fought back and garnered the win off two goals by Marlon ‘El Gato’ Meza. The Guatemalan’s first goal came in the 56th minute from the penalty spot after Darrel Myvett cut down a defender. Then, in the 88th, Meza beat two defenders entering the penalty box and firing past Woodrow West.
Belize pushed forward but could not pull off the draw.
