GoFundMe page launched to raise funds for legal appeal of Keonia Ara murder case

By Benjamin Flowers: Supporters of Shirley Mai, the mother of 18-year-old Keonia Ara who was brutally murdered back in 2017, have launched a GoFundMe page to raise the funds necessary to file an appeal against the recently concluded murder trial, which saw the two accused found not guilty.

The page was set up by Annabelle Sweetney, who made a call for assistance, particularly to parents to support the appeal.

“We are asking justice to prevail and the only way we can is the help of you guys. Every parent’s support is demanded. This could’ve been my child or yours, as a NATION Keonia is OUR child,” Sweetney said.

On March 11, 2017, Ara’s body was found at a dumpsite outside of Belmopan. Forensic analysis revealed that she had been stabbed to death and her remains set on fire. On February 23, Jaime Patnett and Shaylon Santos, who were charged with her murder, were found not guilty in the Belmopan Supreme Court.

Mai said that once the director of Public Prosecution receives the written judgment for the case, she will have 21 days to appeal the judgment. Up to this morning when our newsroom spoke to Mai, the DPP had not yet received the judgment.
