By Rubén Morales Iglesias: On the occasion of Taiwan’s Children’s Day, Belize Ambassador to Taiwan Dr. Candice Pitts shared Belize’s wonders with underprivileged Taiwanese Children while encouraging them to work for their dreams to come true.

Even though Children’s Day is not until April 4, on Monday, March 28, Ambassador Dr. Candice Pitts celebrated 2022 Children’s Day with children from the Middle Sunshine Program, an after school nonprofit program from Taipei’s Tamsui District’s local teenage students from low income and/or single-parent households.

According to a statement by the Belize Embassy in Taiwan, Ambassador Pitts made a presentation in which she shared some of Belize’s cultural highlights, natural wonders, beautiful peoples, and delectable cuisines while encouraging the children to continue to learn more about Belize so one day they may all be motivated to visit our beautiful country.

Ambassador Pitts told the children that they should learn more about the world outside of Taiwan and they will find out that “what bonds us as human beings is greater than anything that threatens to divide us”.

Hoping to inspire greatness in the children, Ambassador Pitts advised them to never let their circumstances determine their destiny. Anything they can imagine; they can achieve, she said. As an example, she recounted her own life story; telling them how despite very humble beginnings she was able to attain her Ph.D. and is now the Belize Ambassador to Taiwan.

Ambassador Pitts advised them that to achieve their dreams, be successful, and become meaningful members of society, they had to work and persevere. She informed them that no one gave her academic degrees; that she had to work hard for them.

Ambassador Pitts thanked Alice Huang, the principal of the school, and volunteer Helen Lee for organizing the Children’s Day event. Lee said the objective of the Middle Sunshine Program “is to create another ‘home’ for these children where they can feel safe, stable, learn social morals, and receive assistance with their academic studies”.

According to the Belize Embassy in Taiwan, the Middle Sunshine Program is funded through fundraising and private donations.
