Chunox Polyclinic re-opens as a hub for health services in eastern Corozal District

By Aaron Humes: The National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme is being introduced in villages in the eastern half of the Corozal District from the hub of the Chunox Polyclinic.

Area representative Florencio Marin, Jr., said he was encouraged and asked residents to “look forward to this service that [we] will be getting, that Chunox, Sarteneja, Progresso, Copper Bank, deserve.”

These are some of the eight communities to be served from the Chunox Polyclinic, in what Deysi Mendez, Technical Advisor, National Health Insurance, and former Ministry CEO explains is a format first devised for use in Southside Belize City at the start of the NHI in 2001: “…what is being implemented here … is a management through the private sector to help strengthen the public system, but operating through a contract agreement through the National Health Insurance.”

Dr. Mendez reminds that the NHI is a “purchaser” of primary care services from check-ups to medication and specialized services from obstetrics and gynecology to laboratory services, intended to prevent the necessity of intervention at the regional hospitals and Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. She advises residents of the area to make use of the service and be disciplined with your health

NHI registers individuals through their Social Security card to enter the system and assigns participants to clinics where they can access services.

Dr. Jose Salinas, Director, Northern Medical Plaza, is in charge of cooperation between the Ministry and his company based in Orange Walk. As part of the menu of primary health care services, he cites “the management of all common illnesses, screening cancer, inpatients, screening for patients that might have a risk for cardiovascular diseases, immunization as a preventative measure, certain conditions that may be prevalent in the region. The assistance of emergency care whereby patients might have an incident at home or an accident on the road, here at the polyclinic we have the equipment to stabilize those patients and make the proper referral of those patients to the hospital for their definitive management.”
