By Benjamin Flowers: The Government of Belize in keeping its promise to teachers to restore what was lost to them during austerity measures last year, has resumed offering teachers study leave with pay.
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Science, and Technology, issued a notice yesterday to the Belize Teaching Service Commission, managing authorities of government and grant-aided pre-primary, primary, secondary, and tertiary schools that study leave with pay will resume effective April 1, 2022.
“The Ministry appreciates the dedication and the continued support of all school managements, as we persevere in our efforts to provide opportunities for our teachers to gain the specialized content knowledge and pedagogical skills needed to deliver the national curriculum to our nation’s children,” the Ministry said.
Prime Minister John Briceno announced at the end of February that, as of July 1 GOB would restore the 10 percent that was deducted from the salaries of teachers and public officers last year.
Briceno noted that it would be a full restoration of their salaries up front, not in phases. He explained that Belize’s economic recovery has proceeded better than anyone projected, and even though there is still much work to be done, the government saw the opportunity to salute the teachers and public officers for helping to shoulder the burden of fixing the economy.
