Prime Minister John Briceño weighs in on the importance of Berger Field rehabilitation project

By Benjamin Flowers: Prime Minister John Briceño has applauded the commencement of the rehabilitation project for Berger Field in Belize City, emphasizing the potential that the facility and others like it will have to positively affect Belize’s youth population.

The groundbreaking happened yesterday with representatives from the Ministry of Tourism and Diaspora Relations, Belize Tourism Board, Belize City Council, Ministry of Youth, Sports and E-governance, and the National Sports Council in attendance.

“Sports develops children and young people in numerous ways. Aside from keeping them positively engaged… it is discipline, team spirit building, strategy development. Sports is healthy lifestyle building and wellness,” Briceño said.

Briceño added that his administration hopes that the improvement of Berger field and others across the country will revitalize communities and provide safe, inclusive, and sustainable spaces that are easily accessible for residents to practice different sporting activities.

Under the previous government administration, plans were announced for the renovation of Berger Field. Васk іn 2012, there was a press event and a ceremonial groundbreaking to herald the beginning of the project, but no upgrades ever materialized, and the field soon fell into disrepair getting as bad as the grass wasn’t being cut routinely in some years.

In 20221, the Briceño administration signed a memorandum of understanding with the Football Federation of Belize, that paved the way for the current project. President of the Football Federation of Belize (FFB), Sergio Chuc eхрlаіnеd thаt thе рlаn fоr thе fіеld іѕ tо hаvе thrее fіvе-а-ѕіdе ріtсhеѕ wіthіn thаt fіеld, аѕ thе ріtсh wоuld nоt mееt thе іntеrnаtіоnаl ѕtаndаrdѕ іf thеу trіеd tо buіld а full 11 ріtсh.
