By Benjamin Flowers: Renovation works on Berger Field in Belize City officially began this week.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the rehabilitation project, which is being led by the Ministry of Tourism and Diaspora Relations along with the Belize Tourism Board (BTB), was held yesterday.
Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner and representative of the Belize City Council joined the Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations Anthony Mahler, Minister of Youth and Sports Rodwell Ferguson, and Minister of State Gilroy Usher who represented the National Sports Council of Belize attended the ceremony.
The BTB explained that the project will see the upgrading and renovation of the field to FIFA standards, and will also serve to encourage the positive involvement of the wider community, the participation of youths in sporting activities, and foster the development of local sporting talent.
Following the ceremony, the Belize City Council issued a statement saying, “It is our hope that the improvement of this facility along with others across the city will revitalize these communities and provide safe, inclusive, and sustainable spaces that are easily accessible for residents to practice different sporting activities.”
The ceremony and subsequent project materialize a Memorandum of Understanding assigned last year between the Football Federation of Belize, and the Government of Belize via the Ministry of Tourism and Diaspora Relations and the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and E-Governance, which was signed back in November of 2021.
