Russia begins withdrawal of military forces from Ukraine following peace talks, war still not over

Posted: Tuesday, March 29, 2022. 2:52 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Following peace talks held in Turkey earlier today, Russia has begun withdrawing some of its military presence and reducing bombardment in Ukraine, reports the Daily Mail.

The United States and the United Kingdom have confirmed that they have received intelligence confirming the movement of Russian troops from around the Ukrainian capital Kyiv after Deputy Defence Minister Alexander Fomin said that troops would begin backing out. Russia said that it plans to ‘radically reduce’ military activity in Ukraine after the talks, which were described as “meaningful.”

Fomin said: “The Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation has taken the decision to radically reduce combat operations in the Kyiv and Chernihiv areas in order to boost mutual trust and create the necessary conditions for further negotiations and for the signing of the aforementioned agreement.”

The groundwork laid by negotiators is reportedly paving the way for a face-to-face meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Meanwhile, the UK believes that Russia’s withdrawal is more deeply rooted in the fact that its forces failed to capture Kyiv in a matter of days which was part of the invasion plan.

The UK said that bombardments have lessened in some areas but fighting still continues.

“So we don’t want to see anything less than a complete withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukrainian territory,” the UK said.
