By Benjamin Flowers: A team from the Elections and Boundaries Department is headed to Caye Caulker next week to conduct voter registration exercises in preparation for the upcoming village council elections.

The Department issued a public notice this week that the team will be in Caye Caulker on April 7-8, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The notice says that officers will be accepting applications for voter registration and delivery of voter identification cards.

“Persons wishing to apply to be registered are required to produce any of the following valid original documents. – Belizean Birth Certificate, or Belize Nationality Certificate, along with (Social Security Card or photograph certified, stamped and signed by a Justice of the Peace); or – Belizean Passport; or – Commonwealth Passport (for Commonwealth Citizens)” the department said.

In a recent interview, Minister of Local Government Oscar Requena said that his ministry is making preparations for the elections in tandem with the Elections and Boundaries Department.

“We’re looking at possibly May, June, you know that is the possible time frame that we’re looking at and certainly, we’re working very closely with the Elections and Boundaries (Department) to ensure that it’s a smooth process,” Requena said.
