Fire guts interior of King Burger Restaurant and stores in Dangriga

Posted: Friday, April 1, 2022. 11:05 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: A restaurant and two stores were damaged by a fire that broke out Thursday afternoon in the center of Dangriga Town, the cause of which is not yet known.

According to Dangriga Police, King Burger Restaurant was open for business on Thursday morning; however, Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) disconnected the electrical service for outstanding bill arrears. Manager Melvin Holness visited the power company’s office to make arrangements and was informed the electricity would be restored in the course of the day; however, it had not been by 4:15 in the afternoon. The restaurant shut up shop as a result.

Chief Fire Service official Miguel Median happened to be driving by the building in his fire truck just before six in the evening when he saw smoke coming from the window facing out to the street on the lower flat where the restaurant is. Firefighters sprung into action and managed to get the fire under control.

However, it destroyed the contents of the restaurant as well as the inside and roof of the Riverside Thrift Store facing Aranda Crescent, while the American Fashion Used Clothing Store on the other side suffered smoke damage.

The fire is suspected to have started inside King Burger’s kitchen but its cause is not yet known. The building, owned by a member of the Zabaneh family, and the contents of the restaurant and both stores were not insured. Investigations continue.
