By Aaron Humes: The United States Embassy in Belize has honored Coast Guard Lieutenant Commander Alma Pinelo as its Belizean Woman of the Year for being a “a champion for women’s equality in Belize’s Armed Forces.”
One of the few women in senior positions within the national military, Lieutenant Commander Pinelo has worked to empower women as equals of the men. Pinelo helped launch Belize’s first Women, Peace and Security Agenda to increase Belizean women’s roles in national security and to eliminate sexism, prejudice, and discrimination and also plays a key role in the ongoing development of a Sexual Harassment Prevention and Response Program in the security forces.
Lieutenant Commander Pinelo is in training in Taiwan but posted a statement saying, “Proper integration and achieving gender equality and equity is not an easy task. Daily women have to go above and beyond to prove their worth and place they’ve made for themselves when some men simply get the praise for doing the bare minimum.”
And while she acknowledges that this is a product of society, she promises to continue advocating “and ensure that all our voices don’t get lost in all the testosterone.”
