Water rate increase suspended pending full tariff review by Public Utilities Commission

Posted: Sunday, April 3, 2022. 10:22 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: A planned implementation of schedule rate adjustments for water and sanitation costs is on hold pending review by the Public Utilities Commission (PUC).

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Belize Water Services Limited was due for a tariff increase of 2.25 percent as a result of the Full Tariff Review Procedure (FTRP) that would have come into effect on April 1.

But BWS said it was “the right thing to do” to ask the PUC as it now has to review the decision, in an effort to mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and its resulting impact on the lives of customers and Belize’s economy.

The PUC has been asked to expedite the review and in the interim, the PUC has instructed BWS to suspend the implementation of the schedule rate adjustment.
