By Benjamin Flowers: CNN reports that an Airbus A380 jumbo plane had completed two flights in France while running on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) which is made, predominantly, of used cooking oil and waste fats.
The test flight, done on March 25, ran for three hours, with the plane operating on a single Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engine. A second flight was done on March 29, from the city of Toulouse to Nice, which has an average time of an hour and fifteen minutes.
The company supplying the SAF, TotalEnergies, which is based in France’s Normandy region, says that the use of the fuel is the key to reducing global carbon emissions, by 2050, claiming that the fuel could reduce emissions between 53-71 percent.
Similar tests have been done using SAF with smaller airplanes, including an A350 which was tested in March 2021, and an A319neo single-aisle aircraft.
