By Benjamin Flowers: Leader of the Opposition, Moses “Shyne” Barrow, has condemned the behavior of police officers involved in an obscene confrontation that was caught on video between police and a civilian at the Sir Barry Bowen Municipal Airstrip.
Following the sharing of the video on social media, Barrow issued a statement, noting that he does not have all the details but that the officer’s conduct was reprehensible all the same.
“… A police officer should never conduct themselves in this apparently unprofessional manner when dealing with the public,” Barrow said. “All persons who come in contact with the law must be treated fairly with decency and the presumption of innocence. I have asked the ComPol to look into the matter. The Opposition condemns any abuse of the public by those sworn to serve.”
He also used the statement to thank the police officers who maintain professionalism in the discharge of their duties on a daily basis.
Yesterday the Belize Police Department stated that the male officer whose actions were unprofessional and the accompanying female officer who did not assist in de-escalating the situation will face disciplinary measures over the incident.
The video referenced showed the officer using various obscenities as he performs a search of a man at the airport, threatening to bring him up on charges, and even slapping the phone out of the man’s hand, all while maintaining a loud and aggressive behavior.
BBN would also like to note to officers of the Belize Police Department sworn to uphold the law that you are officers tasked with enforcing the law and no one is above it, not even you; and cameras are always watching!
