Asian grocer accused of pulling pellet gun on woman remanded to prison

By BBN Staff: An Asian businessman is on remand at the Belize Central Prison after allegedly shooting a woman with a pellet gun.

Twenty-three-year-old Wen Jun Zhen appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Monday, answering to a single charge of aggravated assault with a dangerous instrument.

In court, Zhen was provided with a translator who spoke his native language so he could understand the proceedings.

Due to the nature of the offense, he was denied bail and remanded to prison. Zhen told the court that he was of the view that he would be granted bail since the offense occurred with a pellet gun and not an actual firearm.

However, the magistrate explained that a firearm according to 16-2 (D) of the Crime Control & Criminal Act, is defined as “any potable barrel weapon that expels or is ready to expel a shot by ways of explosion and a pellet gun has a portable barrel, it can expel a bullet…”

Zhen was informed that he must seek Legal advice from an attorney to apply for Supreme Court bail.
