Belize to play Guatemala in Concacaf Nations League

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Men’s National Football Team (BMNT) will play Guatemala, French Guiana, and the Dominican Republic in Group D of the Concacaf Nations League B. This was determined at the draw for the second edition of the Concacaf Nations League (CNL) on Monday, April 4, in Miami.

Games will be played in a round-robin home and away format meaning the BMNT will play three games at home and three away.

Hopefully, this time around the BMNT doesn’t experience flight problems to French Guiana. Two years ago, Belize had to forfeit the French Guiana match because the FFB was unable to get a flight to Cayenne, the capital of French Guiana. At the time, the FFB even contracted a private plane to take the team to French Guiana, but the Cayenne International Airport did not authorize the plane for landing, so the BMNT didn’t travel and gave up the three points.

Concacaf divided the Confederation’s 41 Member Associations into three Leagues based on the results of the 2019 CNL Group Stage which includes a promotion and relegation system between leagues. Belize played in the League B in 2019 and was able to maintain the level.

The draw results are as follows:

League A
Group A: Mexico, Jamaica, Suriname
Group B: Costa Rica, Panama, Martinique
Group C: Canada, Honduras, Curaçao
Group D: United States, El Salvador, Grenada

League B
Group A: Cuba, Guadeloupe, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados
Group B: Haiti, Bermuda, Guyana, Montserrat
Group C: Trinidad & Tobago, Nicaragua, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Bahamas
Group D: Guatemala, French Guiana, Dominican Republic, Belize

League C
Group A: Bonaire, Turks and Caicos Islands, U.S. Virgin Islands, Sint Maarten
Group B: Saint Kitts and Nevis, Aruba, Saint Martin
Group C: Saint Lucia, Dominica, Anguilla
Group D: Puerto Rico, Cayman Islands, British Virgin Islands

“The 2022/23 CNL Group Stage will begin with home and away round-robin play on the FIFA Match Windows of June 2022 (double window) and March 2023,” said Concacaf.

“The Group Stage will be followed by the Concacaf Nations League Finals presented by Qatar Airways (CNLF) in June 2023 played between the four League A group winners.”
