By Benjamin Flowers: The Ministry of National Defence and Border Security has issued a statement of condolence to the family of 38-year-old Estevan Baeza who died from severe injuries sustained after being beaten to death by a Belize Defence Force Solider, Private Raheem Williams.
The Ministry said that Williams, who is stationed at Colonel Eyles Camp in Orange Walk Town, got into a fight with Baeza, a civilian, on the night of Friday, April 1.
“The Police Department investigation continues, and Private Raheem Williams has been detained pending charges. Commander Belize Defence Force remains committed with the facilitation of the police investigation,” the Ministry said. “On behalf of Commander Belize Defence Force, the Ministry of National Defence and Border Security extends our deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Estevan Baeza.”
In a recent interview with Channel 7 News, Baeza’s mother said that the violent altercation that cost her son his life started over a lighter that he loaned to Williams.
Williams then reportedly lent the lighter out to several other people and got angry when Baeza asked for it back. She is calling on authorities to ensure that justice is served for her son.
Most shockingly, the vicious beat down was captured on a cell phone video and showed several people casually passing by without rendering aid or offering any intervention.
