By Benjamin Flowers: Continuing a renewed push to improve the quality of life for its officers, the Belize Police Department has signed an agreement with Belize Specialists Hospital Gastroenterology and Endoscopy Center this week, to make medical services more affordable.
The initiative, led by Commander of Eastern Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Howell Gillett, came into effect on Monday, when he signed the agreement which will see officers getting discounts on the services the hospital provides.
Those medical services include but are not limited to gastroenterology, urology, physiotherapy, wound care, Intensive Care Services, Nephrology, Gynecology, and ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) services among several others.
“We want to work on the fitness level of our officers because a fit officer is a more alert officer, a better performing officer,” Gillett said.
ACP Gillett also thanked Dr. Ervin Gabourel for signing on to the agreement.
In mid-March, Gillett signed a one-year agreement with Central Drug Store, to allow officers to get discounts on over-the-counter and prescription medications. He noted that several other quality of life initiatives are in the process for police officers, including negotiations with a major bank in Belize to allow uniformed officers to receive priority service when they go to do a transaction.
Gillett said that doing so will minimize the time officers have to take off for their personal business and allow them more time to be on the job.
