By BBN Staff: A man who police say appeared to be under the influence of alcohol when they caught him damaging a vehicle, has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison.
Omar Angel Avelar was arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday where he was read four charges, one count each of driving a motor vehicle whilst under the influence of drugs or alcohol; possession of a firearm whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs; drove an unlicensed motor vehicle, and failure to provide blood/urine specimen.
He was denied bail and remanded to the Belize Central Prison until June 1.
Police say that they were on mobile patrol on Vernon Street in Belize City, on March 31 when they found a man hitting a parked car with an object and pulling off the side mirrors. When the officers questioned what he was doing, he explained to them that he was angry with his father. He was detained and when officers searched the vehicle he was driving they said the vehicle smelled of alcohol and had empty bottles of Red Stripe beer inside. The vehicle also was not licensed as required by law.
Police also found on him a black pistol with a magazine carrying hollow-point bullets. Officers also say that Avelar had the strong scent of alcohol on him and was continually repeating himself and had slurred speech, but when they asked for a urine sample to determine his blood alcohol content, he refused.
While detained at the police station, an elderly man came saying that he was the owner of the damaged vehicle and that Avelar was his son.
