By Rubén Morales Iglesias: After two recent wildlife-vehicle collisions, the Forest Department took to social media asking motorists to be more careful on our roads to avoid collisions with wild animals.

“The Forest Department would like to remind the general public to always be vigilant and exercise caution when driving,” said the Belize Forest Department.

The Forest Department reported that during the past few days it had received information of two wildlife-vehicle collisions and posted photographs of the dead animals, a jaguar on the Southern Highway and a puma on the George Price Highway.

“Wildlife-vehicle collisions not only cause harm to wildlife but can be costly, dangerous or even fatal for humans,” said the Forest Department while it asked people to report wildlife vehicle collisions and roadkills of tapirs, jaguars, pumas, ocelots, margays, and jaguarundis by calling 8221524 or through the Facebook Messenger.

The Belize Forest Department said we can all do our part by:

• Taking special care and attention near animal crossing warning signs

• Always obeying speed limits and wearing safety belts

• Minimize distractions from passengers and accessories, you’ll be more likely to spot approaching animals.

• Using your high beams whenever possible. This will give you more time to spot and react to animals on the road.

• Slowing down gives us and wildlife more time to react.
