Posted: Wednesday, April 6, 2022. 6:27 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: A 56-year-old Belize City resident who was caught burglarizing the home of his own niece, was set free in court this week.

When Alvaro Avilez appeared in the Magistrate’s Court on a charge of burglary, he pleaded not guilty.

Following his guilty plea, the victim, his niece, told the court she did not want any further action against him. The Magistrate then struck out the case for want of prosecution.

He was accused of breaking into his niece’s house on April 4 and stealing a table, a gold chain, and over $600, in cash to a total value of $1,313. When detained by police, Avilez admitted he broke into the house but maintains he did not steal anything.

Avilez was looking at a possible seven-year prison sentence if he was convicted.
