By Benjamin Flowers: The National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) is the latest entity to call for a referendum on the Cannabis Control Act, the legislation proposed to legalize marijuana use in Belize and establish a regulated marijuana industry.
The NTUCB issued a statement on Tuesday demanding that the Government of Belize immediately halt all progress with respect to passing the legislation.
“We hereby demand for the Government of Belize to conduct countrywide consultations to sensitize and listen to the positions of Stakeholders, Social Partners, and the wider public. The NTUCB is also calling upon the Government of Belize to conduct a Referendum. In a democracy, the people have a voice so let the people’s voices be heard,” the NTUCB said.
The National Evangelical Association of Belize sounded the call for a referendum yesterday, noting that all countries that legalized marijuana use before Belize did so via referendum. The Opposition United Democratic Party also weighed in on the issue, agreeing with NEAB that a referendum is the best course of action under the circumstances.
