By BBN Staff: A 51-year-old Belize City resident will spend the next two years at the Belize Central Prison following a conviction for burglary.

Mark Longsworth appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today, accused of fitting himself through a window at W-Zero Shop on Western Avenue and stealing $500.

He wasted no time pleading guilty and explained that he was drinking wine mixed with valium when he approached the shop to buy another drink from there and noticed that the burglar bars were open, so he reached in and grabbed the money. He also claims that he only stole $65.

He told the court that he was sorry for what he did and pleaded not to be sent to prison, as he is suffering from cancer.

However, the magistrate considered the fact that he had two previous convictions for crimes of dishonesty, one of which was back in 2015 when he did six months in prison for handling stolen goods. Based on his previous convictions, he was sentenced to two years.
