Belize participates in Caribbean nations security conference

Posted: Friday, April 8, 2022. 6:07 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: A delegation headed by Commandant of the Coast Guard, Rear Admiral Elton Bennett, and including members of the Belize Coast Guard and the United States Security Cooperation Office in Belize, has returned from the Caribbean Nations Security Conference (CANSEC) held in Bridgetown, Barbados, this week.

The conference, held under the theme “Multinational Cooperation In A Changing Operational Environment,” had the participation of 22 nations and featured a broad range of security-related topics discussed. Of most focus to Belize, the delegation was combating illicit trafficking in the northwest Caribbean, the rapidly increasing impacts of climate change, and maritime security contribution to our Blue Economy.

Rear-Admiral Bennett also had the opportunity to engage in bilateral discussions with the Bahamas, Canada, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago on security cooperation, including exchanges, training, and information sharing. Also of major discussion was the upcoming Exercise Tradewinds which will be hosted in Belize in May of this year.

CANSEC co-hosts, General Laura Richardson, Commander of United States Southern Command, and the Chief of Staff of the Barbados Defence Force, Commodore Errington Shurland, led and facilitated discussions on security threats that are impacting the Caribbean Region. General Richardson maintained that the United States Southern Command remains committed to supporting security and stability in the Caribbean region through engagement and security cooperation.

During her welcome address, Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley described the Caribbean as a zone of peace but cautioned that this peace that we enjoy today must not be taken for granted. The security challenges that we face today such as climate change that threatens small island states, and violence and corruption caused by illicit trafficking are threats that we must face collaboratively as a region, she stated.
