By BBN Staff: There was a house fire in La Democracia Village, Belize District, last night.
Authorities say that around 8:45 p.m. they were called to the scene of a fire about 500 yards off the corner of Third Street, to find a wooden house approximately 16 by 16 feet engulfed in flames.
Personnel from the Belmopan station of the Belize National Fire Service (BNFS) arrived around 9:20 to extinguish the blaze, but by that time the home had been totally destroyed.
The homeowner, 21-year-old Britney Estrada, told authorities that a month and three weeks ago, she had left the home in the care of her father, Paul Smith Sr., and her mother Becky Estrada.
The parents told authorities that they had last checked on the house around 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday and that nothing unusual was seen.
The house was not insured and the value of the damage has yet to be calculated.
The BNFS is conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire.
