Man pleads guilty to scamming people on Facebook, girlfriend who was originally charged released from prison

By BBN Staff: After four nights in the Belize City Central Prison, 42-year-old Geraldine Rose Garbutt, who was charged with obtaining property by deception, has been set free, after her boyfriend pleaded guilty to the crime.

Dane Grinage, 29, appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today, admitting that he scammed a woman out of $270 via Facebook Buy and Sell, for a Whirlpool washer he never delivered. Grinage said that he used Garbutt’s bank account number in the scam without her knowledge, which is how police ended up arresting her. 

For his guilty plea and the fact that he is a first offender, the court imposed a $1,000 plus  $5.00 cost of court to be paid by August 31, 2022 or he will spend three months in jail for default.

Grinage was also ordered to reimburse the victim the $270 which she paid out to him.
