By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize Tax Service recently began publishing the names of individuals and companies who owe the Government of Belize taxes and how much they owe but now, one company has retained an attorney after it says the BTS damaged its reputation by publishing the wrong amount.
The law firm of Elrington and Company has sent a letter to the BTS on behalf of M&M Engineering, noting that the BTS published in newspapers and through other media that the company is a Tax Defaulter under Section 64 A of the Tax Administration and Procedure Act (TAPA) for having outstanding taxes totaling $2,784,507.54.
“Our client rejects having owed any such sum to the Government of Belize. Those publications have caused irreparable damage to M&M Engineering. We, therefore, demand that you cease and desist from publishing any publications of such causing any further damage to our client, M&M Engineering,” the law firm said.
The company also indicated that it is willing to settle to bring the matter to a “quick and amicable” solution and invites the BTS to set a date and time to discuss a settlement.
