Alicia Thompson is prime rider among 11 cyclists competing in 31st Women’s Cross Country Classic on Sunday

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Alicia Thompson is the prime rider in Sunday’s 31st Women’s Cross Country Classic having won the event twice in 2015 and 2017. Alicia has also won the National Road Championship twice in 2018 and 2021 coupled with six New Year’s Cycling Classics in 2006,2015/16/17/18, and 2020.

“This is my first race for this year and I’m not sure what to expect. I am a veteran and I’m hoping that my experience gets me through this and hopefully allows me to be victorious,” Alicia said to Breaking Belize News on Saturday evening.

Alicia will not only have to contend with young Gabrielle Gabourel and Paulita Chavarria, and perennial rivals like Fiona Castillo, Marinette Flowers, Patricia Chavarria, and Gabrielle Lovell, she is also going up against two American riders, Stern Morgan and Katy Sorrell.

“I just read up on the Americans; it seems they will be great competitors,” Alicia said.

“Let’s see how it goes. Let’s see if the Belizean girls are strong enough to hold them off on Sunday.”

Belizean fans are certainly hoping they do.

The 31st Annual Women’s Cross Country Classic starts at the Queen Elizabeth Park in San Ignacio at 8:00 a.m. enroute to BTL Park in Belize City via the George Price Highway. When the riders get to Belize City, they will enter by the Lord Ridge Cemetery, turn at the Central American Blvd roundabout, head to the Belcan Bridge, unto Princess Margaret Drive, finishing at the BTL Park, said the CFB.
