Forestry Department to capture crocodile that attacked a diver in Caye Caulker

Posted: Sunday, April 10, 2022. 9:10 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The Forestry Department has announced that it will capture a crocodile in Caye Caulker that attacked a man on Friday, April 8.

The Department said that the crocodile attacked Caye Caulker resident Josua Young around 10:00 a.m. that day, leaving injuries on his forehead and chin.

The Forestry Department will be working along with the American Crocodile Education Sanctuary (ACES) to capture the croc.

With respect to preventing future croc attacks the department issued a number of reminders to the public:

“Do not feed any crocodile. This is a dangerous practice and can cause crocodiles to lose their fear of humans; Do not dispose of fish carcasses nearby or in areas where fishing. This can cause indirect feeding of crocodiles; Protect your pets if you live close to the water; Place garbage in its proper place and do not dump garbage in or close to the water. This can also cause indirect feeding of crocodiles, and leave crocodiles alone. Keep your distance and do not try to capture or interfere with them,” the forestry Department said.

Anyone who notices a crocodile showing aggressive behavior is urged to call either the Forestry Department at 822-1524 or ACES at 623-7920.
