John Fitzgerald King – A one of a kind footballer, dead at the tender age of 28

Posted: Sunday, April 10, 2022. 4:31 pm CST.

Adapted from a social media post contributed by the BDF Football Club: Born in Belize City and raised in the Jungle area, John King was very active, playing football from an early age with the Brown Bombers youth football club while attending Holy Redeemer RC School. At that time, the majority of youths within the Pickstock community were loyal to the basketball sport, but John or “King” as he is affectionately known, was different. He fell in love with football and that gave him the opportunity to join, back then Power House and 3 times, back to back to back Champions, BDF FC as the “Rookie” in 2007. That year, at the tender age of 15, he played along with players such as Woodrow West, Deon McCauley, David Trapp, Trevor Lennan, Vallan Symns and Danny Jimenez, just to name a few.

John King then migrated down south to the Culture Capital to attend Delille Academy and that gave him another opportunity to play in the Mayor’s Cup Competition. The Bandits then signed King, where he won his fourth Championship playing football at the highest level in Belize. John King was seeking another championship and he never doubted himself when he signed on with Placencia Assassins, winning his 5th Championship at such a very young age.

John has represented Belize in the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions league with Police United, making history as one of the youngest Belizean to score a goal in this league, when he missile a left foot shot that Pachuca’s (Mexico) goal keeper just couldn’t reach.

John then made a move to Verdes FC, however his heart was still in Griga and that made him move back to Dangriga and join Wagiya FC where he was playing when this piece about him was first written on January 10th, 2020. His intent was to give hope of a championship once again to the Dangriga fans.

John King has had 5 championships and made it to 2 sub-championships. Although the road has been tough, King has never given up and remains positive that he will always achieve greatness.

John King was shot and killed on Saturday, 9th April, 2022, at 7:30 pm while at the residence of Mark Smith located on Victoria Street in Belize City. Accordingly King was at the residence using Mark Smith’s cellphone when they heard someone shouting the word “Evil” several times. King walked to the door to check who it was, and when he opened the door someone fired several shots at him causing his injuries. King died later on Saturday night while receiving treatment at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH).

Breaking Belize News (BBN) joins Belizeans in mourning the death of another young black man and send condolences to John King’s family and friends.

REST IN PEACE JOHN FITZGERALD KING.
