By Rubén Morales Iglesias: US cyclist Katy Sorrell won 31st Women’s Cross Country Cycling Classic on Sunday in three hours, 23 minutes, and 17 seconds (3:23:17).

Riding for Team Cardinal, the American duo of Katy Sorrell and Morgan Stern controlled Belize’s top women’s race which started in San Ignacio and finished at BTL Park in Belize City. They rode hand in hand over the finish line.

2015 and 2017 winner Alicia Thompson of team Belize Bank Swoosh won the four-woman sprint for third place. C-Ray’s Gabrielle Gabourel took 4th place.

The Chavarria Cycling Team placed the next two riders. Paulita Chavarria finished 5th and Patricia Chavarria was 6th.

Kedisha Francis rode in 7th, Fiona Humes-Castillo took 8th.

The CFB had special prizes for the Youngest Rider, 16-year-old SCA 4th form student Gabrielle Gabourel and for the Oldest Rider, Fiona Castillo.

The Cycling Federation of Belize had to cancel the live streaming of the race due to the unfortunate death of Edison ‘Vintage’ Usher and Kadeem Banks who died after a motorcycle accident on the George Price Highway. Both were travelling from Belize City to San Ignacio to provide live streaming coverage of the race. Banks died on the spot while Usher succumbed to his injuries at the Western Regional Hospital in Belmopan later.
