By Aaron Humes: If the comments under United Democratic Party vice-chairman Alberto August’s social media post today are any indication, it’s not a favorite among Belizeans.
But whether or not you eat it, corned beef now costs a lot more.
According to August, at his neighborhood grocery store, wherever that may be, a 12-ounce can now costs $9.45, up from $4.75.
The brand pictured, Grace, is imported from Jamaica by way of Grace Kennedy (Belize) Limited. Reports suggest the cost, insurance and freight of this and similar products has gone up dramatically in recent months.
August claims, “If this is not devaluation of the Belizean dollar then I don’t know what is?…This government has now converted corned beef into a food only for the rich and famous.”
We’ll look into the claims and keep following the story.
